| How AdWords Campaigns work |
|
Here is an explanation in simple terms of the structure and workings of a Google AdWords campaign, and how it affects your budget. For advice on strategy and tactics, and a more detailed treatment of this complex subject, visit Google AdWords Guide: Novice to Expert to Superhuman. |
| |
The Structure of an AdWords Campaign: |
— |
A Campaign can contain several Ad Groups. |
| — |
An Ad Group can contain many Keywords and many Ad Variations. |
| — |
An Ad Variation is a unique advertisement that contains the Keywords. |
| — |
The AdWords Campaign Manager enables you to design Ad Variation templates to generate many unique advertisements that contain the Keywords. |
| |
The Search - Click - Visit - Pay Process: |
|
1. A surfer types a search term into Google. Example: A man wants red roses delivered to his wife in New York on Valentine's Day. He types "red roses New York Valentine's Day". If times are hard, he may also type "cheap" or "free delivery". Because it's likely that florists stock roses in various colours, he may omit the word "red" from his search term.
2. Google displays hundreds of organic (free) search results and several (paid) AdWords ads. These are the "search traffic" ads* referred to in the section above. He now has two routes that he can follow: Click on an AdWords ad or an organic link to a web site.
3a. The surfer clicks on an AdWords ad. The surfer visits the advertiser's web site's landing page. The advertiser pays Google the amount of his maximum CPC (cost-per-click) bid for search traffic ads, or less, depending on the keywords' 'Quality Score'**.
3b. The surfer clicks on an organic link to a web site. The surfer visits the web site's landing page. If the site's owner is an AdSense publisher, and the advertiser has switched on "Content Network"* (referred to in the section above) in his AdWords Campaign Ad Group, the advertiser's ad may appear there. If the visitor clicks on it, the advertiser pays Google the amount of his maximum CPC (cost-per-click) bid for Content Network ads*, or less, depending on the keywords' 'Quality Score'**. |
| |
|
|
* "Search traffic" ads, "Content Network" ads, "Search Partners" ads, "Placement" ads: |
|
"Search traffic" ads are displayed on Google's search results pages, usually in a column to the right of the organic search results. The quality of traffic from such ads is very high (if the ad is worded carefully).
"Content Network" ads appear on web sites as AdSense ads. Because web sites displaying AdSense ads can contain textual and graphical content less relevant and even irrelevant to the surfer's search term, traffic from such sites tends to be of lower quality, and therefore less profitable, than traffic directly from the search results pages.
"Search Partners" ads appear in the sections for paid ads on other search engines' results pages which have an agreement with Google. Such search engines include AOL, Ask.com, and many other search sites on the web. Because Google has no control over the search algorithms of these other sites, the quality of their traffic may be lower than that of Google's own.
"Placement" ads are also AdSense ads, but advertisers specify the web sites and web pages on which they appear. The quality of traffic from such ads can be very high (if the ad is worded carefully).
Google allows advertisers to specify different maximum bid amounts for these various types of advertising. Bids for the Content Network and Search Partners should be kept much lower and be more tightly controlled than those for search traffic and Placement ads. Controlling such differences would be a gargantuan task, done manually. For this purpose, AdWords Campaign Manager uses a different algorithm to calculate each type across the board, and allows users to recalculate and to switch between various sets of bid amounts at will. |
| |
|
|
** Quality Score: |
|
Google assigns a Quality Score to every keyword, based on its bid amount, its relevance to advertisement text, its relevance to the destination URL (landing page web address), its relevance to the textual content of the landing page, and its CTR (click-through rate, i.e., the number of clicks as a proportion of the number of showings). Consider these "formulas", to understand the relationship:
Greater Relevance --> Higher CTR.
Greater Relevance or Higher CTR or Higher Bid Amount --> Higher Quality Score.
Higher Quality Score --> Higher Position among the Displayed Ads or Lower Actual Cost Per Click.
Higher Quality Score + Higher Bid Amount = Higher Position among the Displayed Ads.
Higher Quality Score + Lower Bid Amount = Lower Position among the Displayed Ads.
The aim is to get your ads in the desired position -- top is not always best -- by achieving as high a Quality Score as possible by means of Greater Relevance rather than by Higher Bid Amount. The importance of Greater Relevance can be seen clearly, because it increases the Quality Score both directly (linearly) and cumulatively (logarithmically) by increasing the CTR which itself increases the Quality Score.
Most advertisers' keywords suffer from the following:
Little Relevance --> Low Quality Score
Little Relevance --> Low CTR --> Even Lower Quality Score
Low Quality Score + Huge Bid Amount = High Position among the Displayed Ads.
Low Quality Score + High Bid Amount = Low Position among the Displayed Ads.
Low Quality Score + Low Bid Amount = Very Low Position among the Displayed Ads.
The AdWords Campaign Manager addresses all these concerns by making relevance the cornerstone of its being. The tightest possible integration between keywords, advertisement text and destination URLs, coupled with global, yet fine-grained, control over each keyword's individual maximum bid amount, ensures a high Quality Score and low Cost Per Click. |

The AdWords Campaign Manager Index Tabs: |
— |
The 'Keywords' index tab is where a keyword list is prepared for processing. |
| — |
The 'Content' index tab is where the keyword list is processed into a combined list of keyword phrases, and where the Ad Variation template is designed. |
| — |
The 'Output' index tab is where the keyword list is calculated and converted to several formats, and where the ads are generated, ready for upload into an AdWords Campaign. |
| |
Typical tasks 1-2 |
|
Preparing a Campaign for processing. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 1a: |
|
Create a new Campaign folder. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Set the name of a new Campaign: (Click 'Folder...') <Alt>+<.> or, if you've just started the program, <Enter>, to open the 'Folder' dialog. (Click the 'New Campaign name' textbox) <Alt>+<N> and type the name of the new campaign. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Select a folder in which to create the new Campaign folder: (Click 'Setup') <Alt>+<S> to open the 'Browse For Folder' dialog. Navigate to a folder where you keep all your campaigns. Make New Folder, if necessary. (Click 'OK') <Enter> to create the campaign folder. That's all you need to do. The Campaign folder and all its required sub-folders are created automatically in the 'parent' folder where you keep all your Campaign folders. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 1b: |
|
Choose an existing Campaign folder for a new or existing Ad Group. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Open the Campaign folder dialog: (Click 'Folder...') <Alt>+<.> or, if you've just started the program, <Enter>, to open the 'Folder' dialog. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Select the Campaign folder: (Click 'Campaign') <Alt>+<C> or simply <Enter> to open the 'Browse For Folder' dialog. Navigate to the folder where you keep the campaign that you want to open. (Click 'OK') <Enter> to set the campaign folder. |

Select the options that suit your preference. You should always set the 'Minimum CPC bid' for your country's currency. (The default is "0.04".) |
| |
Typical tasks 3-15 |
|
The 'Keywords' index tab -- Creating the 'Keyword Lists' and 'Bid data' as the basic ammunition for the Campaign. |
| |
|
(Click the 'Keywords' tab) <Ctrl>+<K> to select it. |
|
|
The 'Keywords' sub-tabs: 'Imported', 'Loaded', 'Negative' |
| |
|
(Click the 'Imported' sub-tab) <Ctrl>+<I> to select it. (Click the 'Loaded' sub-tab) <Ctrl>+<L> to select it. (Click the 'Negative' sub-tab) <Ctrl>+<N> to select it. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 3: |
|
Combine some different new keywords into a single list. |
| |
|
There are two ways to do this: 1. Import a keyword list from a text (.txt) file. 2. Add keywords manually to the list. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
1. |
Import a keyword list from a text file: (Click 'Import') <Alt>+<T> to open the 'Open' file dialog. Select a text (.txt) file containing a keyword list. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
(Click 'Open') <Alt>+<O> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click the file) to Import the file into the 'Imported' datagrid. You do not need to have the 'Imported' datagrid showing to Import a keyword list; it is shown automatically after the Import operation. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Repeat Step 2 for all the different new keywords that you want in the combined list. |
| Step 4 (see
image) |
2. |
Add a keyword to the list manually: (Click 'Add') <Alt>+<D> to add a new row to the datagrid. |
| Step 5 (see
image) |
|
Just start typing the name of the keyword. If you want it to belong to a certain category, click or <Shift>+<Tab> to move the datagrid highlight to the 'Field' column, and type the name of the category. Alternatively, leave the new keywords' 'Field' value as the default "none" for the time being, and update them all at once with the bulk update function in Step 6. |
Mass Edit Tip: |
|
Bulk enter 'Field' data into a datagrid. |
| Step 6.a (see
image) |
|
Select a datagrid row containing any one of the newly added keywords: Click the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing "none" in the 'Field' column. The row is now highlighted to show that it is "selected". |
| Step 6.b (see
image) |
|
Select all the newly added keywords: (Click 'Select field') <Alt>+<F> to select all keywords with the 'Field' value "none". |
| Step 6.c (see
image) |
|
Type the desired name for the category in the 'Bulk enter in selected rows' textbox <Alt>+<B>. (Click 'Field') <Tab>, <Enter>. All the selected keywords are assigned to that category. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 4: |
|
Sort a keyword list. |
Tip: |
|
Because there can be several categories of keywords in the same list, various sorting methods are provided, to enable you to position any keywords in any order with one or more sorting operations. Experiment with various combinations of the methods to see the results. Below is just one example. |
| |
|
Example: Group together all the keywords of a certain 'Field', sort them in ascending order, and position them between certain other keyword groups. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Select a datagrid row: Click the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing the 'Field' that you want to operate on. The row is now highlighted to show that it is "selected". |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Select all keywords of the same 'Field': (Click 'Select field') <Alt>+<F> to select all keywords with the same 'Field' value as that of the selected row. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Group together all the keywords of the 'Field': (Click 'Order') <Alt>+<O> to group together all the keywords with that 'Field' value in reverse order of selection at the bottom of the datagrid. |
| Step 4 (see
image) |
|
Sort all the keywords of the 'Field': Click the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing the 'Field' that you want to operate on. (Click 'Select field') <Alt>+<F> to select all keywords with the same 'Field' value as that of the selected row. (Click 'Up arrow' button after 'Sort selected rows') <Alt>+<R>, <Enter> to sort all the keywords of that 'Field' in ascending order. |
| Step 5 (see
image) |
|
Arrange the groups of keywords among themselves as desired by repeating Steps 2, 3 and 4 as necessary. |
Note: |
|
The sorting features exist only for your ease of viewing. Sorting is actually completely unnecessary for the purpose of creating or managing campaigns. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 5: |
|
Exporting a keyword group (without "weight" and "bid" data) to a text (.txt) file. |
Note: |
|
There's a big difference between 'Exporting' and 'Saving' a file. 'Exporting' a keyword group to a text (.txt) file saves only the selected keywords as a simple list. 'Saving' a keyword group or the entire keyword list saves all the accompanying "weight" and "bid" data also. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Select a keyword group as in 'Typical task 4' Steps 1 & 2, or multi-select rows manually with <Shift>+Click or <Ctrl>+Click. Open the 'Save As' file dialog: (Click 'Export') <Alt>+<P>. Select an existing file to overwrite, or type the name of a new file in the 'File name' box. (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<S> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click an existing file to overwrite) to 'Export' the file to disk. |
Tip: |
|
When you Export a negative keyword list, you choose whether to save the keywords' 'Included' column values with the keywords. If you want to keep their 'Included' values, the file is exported to a '.neg' file, not a '.txt' file. |
| |
|
|
Note: |
|
Most of the operations on datagrids apply only to selected rows if any are selected, or to the entire datagrid if no rows are selected. You always see a warning message if the AdWords Campaign Manager thinks that you might be about to perform an important operation that you might not really want to do. To deselect selected rows, click any individual datagrid cell or the 'Select all' button twice <Alt>+<A>, <Alt>+<A>. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 6: |
|
Saving a keyword list (and all its "weight" and "bid" data) to a keyword (.bid) file. |
| |
|
To 'Save' a keyword group, first, select the rows you want to save. To save the entire datagrid, ensure that no rows are selected. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Open the 'Save As' file dialog: (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<V>. Select an existing file to overwrite, or type the name of a new file in the 'File name' box. (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<S> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click an existing file to overwrite) to 'Save' the file to disk. |
Tip: |
|
It is likely that you'll create more than one Ad Group in an AdWords Campaign. To avoid confusion, it is very advisable to give all files meaningful names. The recommended file-naming convention is to form the name from the contents of the file. Thus, a file containing the keyword categories ('Fields') "colour", "flowers", "state", "day" should be named "colour-flowers-state-day". |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 7: |
|
Importing a Negative keyword list from a text (.txt or .neg) file. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Import a Negative keyword list from a text file: (Click 'Import') <Alt>+<T> to open the 'Open' file dialog. You'll see all the keyword list '.txt' and '.neg' files that have been created there. Select a text (.txt or .neg) file whose name begins with "negative", containing a keyword list. |
Note: |
|
Negative '.txt' files contain only the actual keywords; '.neg' files contain the keywords and the saved value of the 'Included' column for each keyword. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
(Click 'Open') <Alt>+<O> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click the file) to Import the file into the 'Negative' datagrid. |
Tip: |
|
The AdWords Campaign Manager recognizes filenames beginning with the text "negative", "Negative" or "NEGATIVE" as being lists of the keywords that you do NOT want your advertisements to be shown for when they are used in search phrases. For example, if you sell roses, you do not want to pay for a click on your ad that is shown as a result of a search for "growing roses". Therefore, you'd include the word "growing" in a Negative keyword list. AdWords Campaign Manager Imports Negative keyword lists automatically into the 'Negative' datagrid, and all others into the 'Imported' datagrid. You do not need to have the 'Negative' datagrid showing to Import a Negative keyword list; it is shown automatically after the Import operation. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 8: |
|
Loading a keyword list from a (.bid) file. |
Note: |
|
There's a big difference between 'Loading' and 'Importing' a file. 'Importing' a keyword list (.txt) file retrieves only a simple list of keywords into the 'Imported' datagrid. 'Loading' a keyword list (.bid) file retrieves all the accompanying "weight" and "bid" data also into the 'Loaded' datagrid. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Load a keyword list from a file: (Click 'Load') <Alt>+<L> to open the 'Open' file dialog. Select a (.bid) file containing a keyword list. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
(Click 'Open') <Alt>+<O> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click the file) to Load the file into the 'Loaded' datagrid. You do not need to have the 'Loaded' datagrid showing to Load a keyword list; it is shown automatically after the Load operation. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 9: |
|
Preparing a keyword list for processing: How to include a keyword in a Campaign, specify its "weight", and select the calculation algorithm. |
Note: |
|
The 'Loaded' datagrid contains the source data for your AdWords Campaign. This is where you decide which keywords are included or excluded, and the degree of their importance. You determine each keyword's "importance" however you wish: e.g., according to the nature of your product or service, a current fad, trend or imminent special occasion, its current popularity or competitiveness, demographic data, etc. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Include/Exclude a keyword: (Click the 'Include' checkbox) <Space> to reverse its current value. Mark a keyword's checkbox to include it in the Campaign; unmark it to exclude it. Press <Enter> or <down arrow> key to move the highlight to the next line of the same column. Alternatively, select the rows of the keywords you want to include or exclude, and (Click Include / Exclude) <Alt>+<I> / <Alt>+<E>. |
Mass Edit Tip: |
|
Click the 'Include' column header to reverse checkbox values of all/selected rows. Ctrl+Click column header to mark/unmark all/selected rows. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Set the weight of a keyword by a fixed amount: Type an amount in each keyword's '$' column, according to your assessment of its importance. During the calculation process later, this amount will be added to the figure in the 'Base bid amount' textbox <Alt>+<B>. If you prefix a minus sign "-" to the amount in the '$' column, the amount will be subtracted from the figure in the 'Base bid amount' textbox. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Set the weight of a keyword by a percentage: If you'll require it (see Note below), type a percentage amount in each keyword's '%' column, according to your assessment of its importance. During the calculation process later, this percentage amount will be multiplied by the figure in the 'Base bid amount' textbox <Alt>+<B>. For example, if the 'Base bid amount' is $0.10 and the percentage is 100%, the keyword bid will still be $0.10. If the percentage is 120%, the keyword bid will be $0.12. If the percentage is 80%, the keyword bid will be $0.08. |
Mass Edit Tip: |
|
Click the '%' column header to calculate the '$' weights of all/selected rows as a percentage. |
| Step 4 (see
image) |
|
Switch the calculation algorithm: (Click the 'Use %' checkbox) <Space> to reverse its current value. Mark a keyword's checkbox to use the 'percentage' algorithm in the output calculation; unmark it to use the 'fixed amount' algorithm. Press <Enter> or <down arrow> key to move the highlight to the next line of the same column. |
Mass Edit Tip: |
|
Click the 'Use %' column header to reverse checkbox values of all/selected rows. Ctrl+Click column header to mark/unmark all/selected rows. |
|
|
The 'fixed amount' algorithm is recommended for "search traffic" and "Placement" advertisements, where the traffic quality is higher; the 'percentage' algorithm is recommended for "Content Network" and "Search Partners" advertisements, where the traffic quality is lower. (See the section "How AdWords Campaigns work" above for an explanation.) You have closer control over the differences in bids by using the 'percentage' algorithm. (Think of the 'fixed amount' algorithm as an "absolute amount" calculation, and the 'percentage' algorithm as a "relative amount" calculation.)
To use the keyword phrase "red roses New York Valentine's Day" as an example: For displaying your ads as "search traffic" or "Placement" advertisements, you might set the base bid amount at $0.50. Using the figures in image 1, the 'fixed amount' algorithm would calculate the maximum bid for a click on an advertisement at $3.00 ($0.50 base bid + $0.25 for "red" + $1.00 for "roses" + $0.50 for "New York" + $0.75 for "Valentine's Day"). In actual fact, "Placement" bids vary hugely, depending on the popularity and prestige of the web site chosen for your ads. For displaying your ads as "Content Network" advertisements, you might set the base bid amount at only $0.10. Using the figures in image 2, the 'percentage' algorithm would calculate the maximum bid for a click on an advertisement at only $0.60 ($0.10 base bid + $0.05 for "red" + $0.20 for "roses" + $0.10 for "New York" + $0.15 for "Valentine's Day"), whereas the 'fixed amount' algorithm would calculate it at $2.60, reflecting only the difference between a base bid of $0.50 and a base bid of $0.10. This would be far too much to pay for a "Content Network" advertisement, and probably too much for a "Search Partners" advertisement, which you might set at, say, half-way between the two extremes. A simple click on the 'Use %' column header switches between the two algorithms. |
Note: |
|
If the datagrid has several 'Fields' and there are keywords with large negative amounts in the '$' column, the final 'Output' may contain several minimum CPC bids (as defined in the 'Options' form for your country's currency) after you reduce the 'Base bid amount' from its original value. In such cases, select those keywords' rows in the datagrid and click the '%' column header to calculate their weights as a percentage, and then click the 'Use %' column header to select the 'percentage' algorithm for those keywords. Then 'Generate' the output again. This may reduce the number of minimum CPC bids in the final 'Output'. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 10: |
|
Bulk entering '$' and '%' data into a datagrid. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Bulk enter data into the '$' column: Select the rows to be edited. (Click the 'Bulk enter into selected rows' '$' textbox). Type the amount to be bulk entered. (Click the '$' button) <Alt>+<$>. The '$' cell of all the selected rows receives the amount typed in the 'Bulk enter into selected rows' '$' textbox. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Bulk enter data into the '%' column: Select the rows to be edited. (Click the 'Bulk enter into selected rows' '%' textbox). Type the percentage to be bulk entered. (Click the '%' button) <Alt>+<%>. The '%' cell of all the selected rows receives the amount typed in the 'Bulk enter into selected rows' '%' textbox. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 11: |
|
Specifying keyword phrase length criteria. |
Commercial Note: |
|
The longer the keyword phrase is, the less likely it is to be used as a search term by a surfer, and therefore the less competitive it is. So-called "long-tail" keywords can therefore have a lower bid, yet still display ads in a prominent position for a search. Although you'll get less traffic for long-tail keywords, that traffic will be better-qualified, because the visitors will be searching for something quite specific. Furthermore, fewer visitors = fewer clicks = lower costs for your campaigns. Tests have shown that 3-keyword phrases are the most profitable, because the searchers know what they want and are ready to buy. Fewer than two ot three keywords indicates "tyre-kickers", and more than three or four indicates "price-comparers". |
Note: |
|
In Abacus AdWords Campaign Manager a "keyword" is defined as the value of a cell in the 'Keyword' column of a datagrid. A keyword may therefore consist of more than one actual word, e.g., "New York". |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Specify fixed amounts for keyword phrase length: <Alt>+<K> moves the focus to the 'keyword phrase length' section. Click on or <Tab> to each 'keyword phrase length' 'fixed amount' textbox in turn. Type an appropriate figure into each textbox. For example, because there's usually more competition for shorter keyword phrases, you might specify $0.10 to be added to the maximum bid amount for single keywords. If you prefix a minus sign "-" to the amount in the textbox, the amount will be subtracted from the calculated bid total. For example, you might specify $0.20 to be subtracted for phrases of 4 keywords or more. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Specify percentages of the 'Base bid amount' for keyword phrase length: <Alt>+<K> moves the focus to the 'keyword phrase length' section. Click on or <Tab> to each 'keyword phrase length' 'percentage' textbox in turn. Type an appropriate percentage figure into each textbox. For example, because there's usually more competition for shorter keyword phrases, you might specify 20% of the 'Base bid amount' to be added to the maximum bid amount for single keywords. If you prefix a minus sign "-" to the amount in the textbox, that percentage of the 'Base bid amount' will be subtracted from the calculated bid total. For example, you might specify 40% of the 'Base bid amount' to be subtracted for phrases of 4 keywords or more. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Apply percentage to keyword weight results: Click on or <Tab> to each 'Apply % to keyword weight results' checkbox in turn. A click or <Space> reverses the value of a checkbox. If the percentage option is specified (its option button is marked), and the checkbox is unmarked, the percentage figure will be applied to the 'Base bid amount'. If the checkbox is marked, however, the percentage figure will be applied to the results of the keyword weight sub-calculation instead of to the 'Base bid amount'. This has the effect of expanding or contracting the range of the disparity between the keyword weights themselves, and between the keyword weights and the 'Base bid amount'. If this sounds complicated, that's because it is. Unless you're a mathematician or a masochist, it is far better to experiment with the alternatives, and see the differences in the actual results. Suffice it to say that there should be enough flexibility in the Abacus AdWords Campaign Manager to satisfy the most fastidious campaign strategist. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 12: |
|
Specifying match type criteria. |
Commercial Note: |
|
The "match type" defines the way Google determines which keywords to use in response to a search term, and therefore which advertisement to display. There are three match types: broad, phrase and exact. You can vary your maximum bid amount, according to the match type.
- Broad match -- If the search term contains your keyword phrase among other words, in any word order, Google may use it to display an advertisement, and charge your account a fee up to your bid amount for "Broad match". For example, if one of your keyword phrases is "roses Valentine's Day" and the search term is "buy cheap Valentine's Day roses", your ad may appear.
- Phrase match -- If the search term contains your keyword phrase among other words, in the same word order, Google may use it to display an advertisement, and charge your account a fee up to your bid amount for "Phrase match". For example, if one of your keyword phrases is "roses Valentine's Day" and the search term is "buy cheap roses Valentine's Day in New York", your ad may appear.
- Exact match -- If the search term contains only your keyword phrase, and in the same word order, Google may use it to display an advertisement, and charge your account a fee up to your bid amount for "Exact match". For example, if one of your keyword phrases is "roses Valentine's Day" and the search term is "roses Valentine's Day", your ad may appear.
Manually, you'd specify the match type thus:
Broad match: no markers - e.g., roses Valentine's Day
Phrase match: double-quotes - e.g., "roses Valentine's Day"
Exact match: brackets - e.g., [roses Valentine's Day]
The more precise the keyword phrase is, the less likely it is to be used as a search term by a surfer, and therefore the less competitive it is (usually*). More precise keywords can therefore have a lower bid, yet still display ads in a prominent position for a search. Although you'll get less traffic for phrase match keywords than for broad match keywords, and even less for exact match keywords, that traffic will be better-qualified, because the visitors will be searching for something quite specific. Furthermore, fewer visitors = fewer clicks = lower costs for your campaigns.
* Depending on the target market, some exact match keyword phrases can be quite competitive, and the maximum bid unusually high. If in doubt, don't guess; check the keyword phrase with the Google AdWords Keyword Tool. (There's a link to it at the bottom of the 'Hints' form in the AdWords Campaign Manager software.) |
| Step 1 (see

|
Specify fixed amounts for keyword match type: <Alt>+<M> moves the focus to the 'keyword match type' section. Click on or <Tab> to each 'keyword match type' 'fixed amount' textbox in turn. Type an appropriate figure into each textbox. For example, because there's usually more competition for broad match keyword phrases, you might specify $0.40 to be added to the maximum bid amount for broad match keywords. If you prefix a minus sign "-" to the amount in the textbox, the amount will be subtracted from the calculated bid total. For example, you might specify $0.40 to be subtracted for exact match phrases. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Specify percentages of the 'Base bid amount' for keyword match type: <Alt>+<M> moves the focus to the 'keyword match type' section. Click on or <Tab> to each 'keyword match type' 'percentage' textbox in turn. Type an appropriate percentage figure into each textbox. For example, because there's usually more competition for broad match keyword phrases, you might specify 80% of the 'Base bid amount' to be added to the maximum bid amount for broad match keyword phrases. If you prefix a minus sign "-" to the amount in the textbox, that percentage of the 'Base bid amount' will be subtracted from the calculated bid total. For example, you might specify 80% of the 'Base bid amount' to be subtracted for exact match keyword phrases. |
| Step 3 (see
|

| Typical
task 13: |
|
Enabling/Disabling calculation options. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
All calculation options are enabled by default. You can disable any or all of them by means of checkboxes. This means that you can retain all the bid data intact, and simply switch them off or on as you need to.
- Unmark the 'Use Keyword Weight results in output calculations' checkbox <Alt>+<W> to prevent all the Keyword Weight data in the datagrid from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the 'Add keyword phrase length values to bid amount' checkbox <Alt>+<K>, <Space> to prevent all the keyword phrase length values from being used in the final output calculation, OR:
- Unmark the '1 word' checkbox <Alt>+<1> to prevent the '1 word' keyword phrase length values from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the '2 words' checkbox <Alt>+<2> to prevent the '2 words' keyword phrase length values from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the '3 word' checkbox <Alt>+<3> to prevent the '3 word' keyword phrase length values from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the '4+ words' checkbox <Alt>+<4> to prevent the '4+ words' keyword phrase length values from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the 'Add keyword match type values to bid amount' checkbox <Alt>+<M>, <Space> to prevent all the keyword match type values from being used in the final output calculation, OR:
- Unmark the 'Broad match' checkbox to prevent the 'Broad match' keyword values from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the 'Phrase match' checkbox to prevent the 'Phrase match' keyword values from being used in the final output calculation.
- Unmark the 'Exact match' checkbox to prevent the 'Exact match' keyword values from being used in the final output calculation.
If all three of the main section checkboxes are unmarked, only the value of the 'Base bid amount' will be used. |

Deleting rows in a datagrid. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Delete selected rows: Select the rows to be deleted. (Click 'Delete'). If you confirm at the warning message, the selected rows are deleted from the datagrid. |
| |
|
Delete all rows: Select either all the rows or none of the rows in the datagrid. (Click 'Delete'). If you confirm at the warning message, all rows are deleted from the datagrid. |
Note: |
|
If you select rows manually by clicking the grey square at the extreme left of a row, you can also use the <Del> key to delete them, but without any warning message. Clicking the grey square at the extreme top left corner of a datagrid selects all rows manually. If you use the buttons to select rows, however, they can be deleted only by means of the 'Delete' button after you confirm at the warning message. |

|
| Typical
task 15: |
|
Removing duplicate rows in a datagrid. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
(Click 'Duplicates') <Alt>+<U>. Rows with duplicate values in the 'Keyword' column are processed as follows: The first row encountered is retained, while all subsequent duplicate rows are deleted. Ensure, therefore that you order the rows as you want before removing duplicates. This process operates on all rows, even if only some rows are selected. |

Typical tasks 16-22 |
|
Processing the 'Loaded' keyword list into a combined list of keyword phrases. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 16: |
|
Storing and saving keyword phrase combinations. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Select the keywords required for each desired keyword phrase combination: (Click the first 'Field order' drop-down list) <Alt>+<F>, <down arrow>. Select the keyword to be first in the keyword combination. Click on subsequent 'Field order' drop-down lists <Tab>, <down arrow>, and select the keyword to be next in the keyword combination. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Store the keyword phrase combination: (Click 'Store this combination') <Alt>+<M>. The keyword combination is stored in the 'phrase combinations list'. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Store other keyword phrase combinations: Repeat Steps 1 & 2 until you have stored all the keyword combinations that you need in the 'phrase combinations list'. |
| Step 4 (see
image) |
|
Edit the keyword phrase combinations: Select lines in the 'phrase combinations list' and click 'Up' <Alt>+<U>, 'Down' <Alt>+<D>, 'Delete' <Del>, as necessary to reorder them until you have all the keyword combinations in the order in which you want them to appear in the 'Keyword Feeder List' to be generated. |
| Step 5 (see
image) |
|
Name the Ad Group: Click the 'Ad Group' textbox <Alt>+<R> and type the name of this Ad Group. |
Tip: |
|
It is advisable to name the Ad Group after the first line in the 'phrase combinations list'. It will become the saved filename, so that you can identify it at other times when you want to load it. |
| Step 6 (see
image) |
|
Save the keyword phrase combinations list: Click 'Save list' to open the 'Save As' file dialog. (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<S> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click an existing file to overwrite) to 'Save' the file to disk. |
Tip: |
|
AdWords Campaign Manager creates a sub-folder automatically from the Ad Group name, and suggests a filename from the first line in the 'phrase combinations list'. It is recommended to accept the default name unless you're saving multiple 'phrase combinations lists' and are using a numbering system to distinguish them. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 17: |
|
Loading keyword phrase combinations. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Navigate to the Ad Group folder where the desired combinations list file resides: (Click 'Load combinations list') <Alt>+<D> to open the 'Open' file dialog. Select the Ad Group folder containing the desired combinations list file: (Click 'Open') <Alt>+<O> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click the folder). All the keyword phrase combinations list files already saved for this Ad Group are listed. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Load a keyword phrase combinations list from a file: Select the file containing the desired combinations list. (Click 'Open') <Alt>+<O> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click the file) to Load the list into the keyword phrase combinations listbox. |
Note: |
|
The Ad Group name is inserted automatically into the 'Ad Group' textbox. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 18: |
|
Generating, checking and editing the Keyword Feeder List. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Generate the 'Keyword Feeder List': Select the "match type" formats that you want for your Keyword Feeder List in the 'Match type to be output to the Keyword Feeder List' section by clicking the checkboxes 'Broad match' <Alt>+<B>, 'Phrase match' <Alt>+<P>, 'Exact match' <Alt>+<E> or <Tab>, <Space>. (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'Keyword Feeder List' is generated. |
Note: |
|
This is the keyword list that "feeds" the final output processes. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Check the 'Keyword Feeder List': Scroll down the Keyword Feeder List, checking for large errors. Small changes can be made later in the 'Output' tab, where the datagrids are editable. (The Keyword Feeder List is not editable directly.) A large error might be the inclusion of an undesired keyword or the exclusion of a desired keyword. In such cases, return to the 'Keyword' tab <Ctrl>+<K>, mark/unmark the 'Include' checkbox of the keyword in the 'Loaded' datagrid, and 'Generate' the Keyword Feeder List again. There will not be any duplicates in the Keyword Feeder List unless there was a duplicate keyword in the 'Loaded' datagrid or a duplicate line in the 'Field order' keyword phrase combinations list. If so, (Click 'Duplicates') to remove them. Select any unwanted keyword phrases individually by clicking the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing the unwanted keyword phrase and clicking 'Delete' <Del>. |
Very important tip: |
|
Do not be overwhelmed by the number of keyword phrases generated in the Keyword Feeder List. Checking even a huge list is quicker and easier than you might think, because the phrases are organized in groups, beginning with the first keyword, then the second keyword, then the third and then the fourth. The fourth keyword group is repeated for each third keyword, the third keyword group is repeated for each second keyword, and the second keyword group is repeated for each first keyword. Once you have checked from the top of the list down to the end of the fourth keyword group in the first complete "set" of keywords, you can recognize the pattern and scroll down quickly to find other phrases that you might want to delete. Then you can use the 'Search' form to select them, so that you can delete them in bulk. |
Tip: |
|
To select all rows of a certain match type, use the 'Select' button, explained in Step 4 below. To select all rows containing certain text, use the 'Select' button, explained in Step 6 below. The 'Select' button opens the 'Search' form, which uses highly sophisticated search algorithms to find data in long lists. |
| |
|
The Keyword Feeder List Search Form. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Using the Keyword Feeder List 'Search' form you can instantly find and select rows containing the data you're looking for, even scattered among a list of thousands of keyword phrases. Click the 'Select' button <Alt>+<S> to open the 'Search' form and set your search criteria for keyword match type and/or text contained in any of the four 'Fields' that form a keyword phrase in the Keyword Feeder List. |
| Step 4 (see
image) |
|
Reorder the 'Keyword Feeder List' in situ: Select the rows you want to reorder, either manually or by means of the 'Select' button. For example, to select all 'Exact match' keyword phrases, click 'Select' <Alt>+<S> and mark only the 'Exact match' <Alt>+<E> checkbox in the 'Search' form, leaving all textboxes blank. (Click 'Search') <Alt>+<S> to close the 'Search' form and select those rows. To reorder selected rows in situ click the 'Sort rows selected' 'up arrow' or 'down arrow' button accordingly. |
Note: |
|
If there are thousands of keyword phrases to sort in situ, it may take a long time, even several minutes on a slow computer. Wait until the process has finished before performing another operation. Not only is this a very inefficient way to sort the Keyword Feeder List, it sorts strictly in alphabetical order, regardless of the 'Fields'. If you want the keyword phrases in ascending or descending alphabetical order and still grouped in their 'Fields', sort the keywords in the 'Loaded' datagrid in the 'Keywords' tab first, and then 'Generate' the Keyword Feeder List in the 'Content' tab. |
| Step 5 (see
image) |
|
Reorder the 'Keyword Feeder List' in groups: Select the rows you want to reorder, either manually or by means of the 'Select' button. For example, to select all 'Phrase match' keyword phrases, click 'Select' <Alt>+<S> and mark only the 'Phrase match' <Alt>+<P> checkbox in the 'Search' form, leaving all textboxes blank. (Click 'Search') <Alt>+<S> to close the 'Search' form and select those rows. To place the selected rows in a group at the bottom of the 'Keyword Feeder List' in reverse order of selection, click the 'Order' button <Alt>+<O>. If the reverse order is not desired, simply repeat this step to reverse the order back to the original order. |
| Example (see
image) |
|
To 'Order' the 'Keyword Feeder List' into the match type order: 'Broad match', 'Phrase match', 'Exact match', do the following:
- Click 'Select'.
- Mark the 'Broad match' checkbox only.
- Click 'Search'.
- Click 'Order'.
- Click 'Select'.
- Mark the 'Phrase match' checkbox only.
- Click 'Search'.
- Click 'Order'.
- Click 'Select'.
- Mark the 'Exact match' checkbox only.
- Click 'Search'.
- Click 'Order'.
If the Keywords were sorted in the 'Loaded' datagrid in the 'Keywords' tab first, the 'Keyword Feeder List' now appears in reverse sorted order, grouped by match type. The order of keyword phrases in the Keyword Feeder List will determine the order of keywords and text ads in all the datagrids in the 'Output' tab. |
| Step 6a (see
image) |
|
Select rows containing a certain combination of keywords: Sometimes you'll want to keep phrases that contain certain keywords generally, but delete phrases that contain those keywords in a specific combination. For example, you'd want to keep phrases containing the words "black" or "white" and "roses" or "tulips", but you'd not want phrases containing the combinations "black" and "daffodils" or "white" and "sunflowers", because those items do not exist. Click 'Select' <Alt>+<S> to open the 'Search' form. Mark the 'Match type' checkboxes as desired. Type the text to seek in the textbox for each keyword position in the keyword combination. Set the 'and/or' criteria. (Click 'Search') <Alt>+<S> to close the 'Search' form and select the rows. |
| Step 6b (see
image) |
|
Delete the selected rows: All the rows meeting the criteria in the 'Search' form are selected in the 'Keyword Feeder List'. Click 'Delete' to delete those selected rows. |
| Example 1 (see
image) |
|
To 'Select' rows containing "black" in the first 'Field' and "carnations" in the second 'Field', do the following:
- Click 'Select'.
- Type "black" in the '1st keyword' <Alt>+<1> textbox.
- Type "carnations" in the '2nd keyword' <Alt>+<2> textbox.
- Click the 'or' option buttons before the 3rd and 4th keyword textboxes because they are left blank.
- Click 'Search'.
Because the 'and' option button between the 1st and 2nd keyword textboxes was set, ONLY rows containing "black" in the first 'Field' AND "carnations" in the second 'Field' are selected. If the 'or' option button between the 1st and 2nd keyword textboxes had been set, ALL rows containing "black" in the first 'Field' would have been selected, regardless of the second 'Field', and ALL rows containing "carnations" in the second 'Field' would have been selected, regardless of the first 'Field'. |
| Example 2 (see
image) |
|
To 'Select' rows containing "carnations" in the second 'Field' and "Maine" in the third 'Field' and "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field', do the following:
- Click 'Select'.
- Leave the '1st keyword' <Alt>+<1> textbox blank and click the following 'or' option button (because we're not interested in what the first 'Field' contains).
- Type "carnations" in the '2nd keyword' <Alt>+<2> textbox and click the following 'and' option button.
- Type "Maine" in the '3rd keyword' <Alt>+<3> textbox and click the following 'and' option button.
- Type "Valentine" in the '4th keyword' <Alt>+<4> textbox.
- Click 'Search'.
Because the 'and' option buttons between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th keyword textboxes were set, ONLY rows containing "carnations" in the second 'Field' AND "Maine" in the third 'Field' AND "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field' are selected. If the 'or' option buttons between the 2nd, 3rd and 4th keyword textboxes had been set, ALL rows containing "carnations" in the second 'Field' would have been selected, regardless of the third and fourth 'Fields', and ALL rows containing "Maine" in the third 'Field' would have been selected, regardless of the second and fourth 'Fields', and ALL rows containing "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field' would have been selected, regardless of the second and third 'Fields'. |
| Example 3 (see
image) |
|
To 'Select' rows containing "black" in the first 'Field' and EITHER "carnations" in the second 'Field' OR "Maine" in the third 'Field' and "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field', do the following:
- Click 'Select'.
- Type "black" in the '1st keyword' <Alt>+<1> textbox and click the following 'and' option button.
- Type "carnations" in the '2nd keyword' <Alt>+<2> textbox and click the following 'or' option button.
- Type "Maine" in the '3rd keyword' <Alt>+<3> textbox and click the following 'and' option button.
- Type "Valentine" in the '4th keyword' <Alt>+<4> textbox.
- Click 'Search'.
Because the 'and' option buttons between the 1st and 2nd keyword textboxes, and between the 3rd and 4th keyword textboxes were set, and the 'or' option button between the 2nd and 3rd keyword textboxes was set, all the rows containing "black" in the first 'Field' AND "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field' are selected, PROVIDED THAT EITHER "carnations" exists in the second 'Field' OR "Maine" exists in the third 'Field'. |
| Example 4 (see
image) |
|
Now see the difference that the 'Group by "and"' checkbox makes to the previous example. To 'Select' rows containing EITHER "black" in the first 'Field' and "carnations" in the second 'Field' OR "Maine" in the third 'Field' and "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field', do the following:
- Click 'Select'.
- Type "black" in the '1st keyword' <Alt>+<1> textbox and click the following 'and' option button.
- Type "carnations" in the '2nd keyword' <Alt>+<2> textbox and click the following 'or' option button.
- Type "Maine" in the '3rd keyword' <Alt>+<3> textbox and click the following 'and' option button.
- Type "Valentine" in the '4th keyword' <Alt>+<4> textbox.
- Mark the 'Group by "and"' checkbox <Alt>+<G>. This is the only difference from the previous example.
- Click 'Search'.
Because the 'Group by "and"' checkbox was marked, the 'and' search criteria are grouped together and take precedence over the 'or' search criteria. When the 'Group by "and"' checkbox is unmarked, the 'or' search criteria are grouped together and take precedence over the 'and' search criteria. So, in this example, the 'and' and 'or' option buttons were set the same as before, but all the rows containing "black" in the first 'Field' AND "carnations" in the second 'Field' are selected, as well as all the rows containing "Maine" in the third 'Field' AND "Valentine" in the fourth 'Field'. |
Tip: |
|
As a further filter you can also specify the number of keywords in the phrases to be selected with the above criteria. Do this by using the 'and' option, instead of the 'or' option, followed by a blank textbox. Thus:
- To apply the search criteria to phrases containing only 3 keywords, leave the 4th textbox blank and click the preceding 'and' option button.
- To apply the search criteria to phrases containing only 2 keywords, leave the 3rd textbox blank and click the preceding 'and' option button.
- To apply the search criteria to phrases containing only 1 keyword, leave the 2nd textbox blank and click the preceding 'and' option button.
(The 'and' option forces a search for a blank, i.e. non-existent, keyword, while the 'or' option ignores a following blank textbox.) |
Tip: |
|
There is a quick and easy way to check all the rows selected, before deleting them, without having to scroll through the whole list:
- Click the 'Order' button <Alt>+<O>. This groups all the selected rows, in reverse order of selection, at the bottom of the list.
- Click the 'Select' button <Alt>+<S>, to open the 'Search' form again.
- Click the 'Search' button <Alt>+<S> or <Enter> immediately, to select all the grouped rows.
All the rows are now selected together at the bottom of the list, making it very easy to deselect individually those you want to keep, before deleting the others. |
| From version 3.1.2.0... |
|
There are additional 'Only this', 'Not this' and 'Ignore' options for each of the four keywords, enabling much more powerful and time-saving searches. There is also a 'Flip' button which reverses the state of selected rows and unselected rows instantly. The 'Search' form now lets you manipulate and control huge keyword lists, containing even tens of thousands of keywords, with ease and accuracy. |
Example 5 (see image 1) (see image 2) |
|
The criteria shown in the first image are used to search for Exact match keyword phrases containing the word "chat" in the second and third keywords, ignoring the first and fourth keywords. The second image shows the result in the Keyword Feeder List after grouping the selected rows at the bottom of the list. |
| Example 6 (see image) |
|
These criteria search for Exact match keyword phrases NOT containing the word "live" in the first keyword, and containing the word "chat" in the second keyword. Keyword phrases of any length are selected because 'Ignore' is marked for the third and fourth keywords. |
| Example 7 (see image) |
|
The only difference between this example and the previous one is that 'Ignore' is unmarked for the third keyword, which contains no text. These criteria search for Exact match keyword phrases NOT containing the word "live" in the first keyword, and containing the word "chat" in the second keyword, and containing nothing in the third keyword (i.e., there must be NO third keyword). Keyword phrases of only two words are selected because the third keyword is blank and 'Ignore' is marked for the fourth keyword. |
| Example 8 (see image) |
|
These criteria select all Exact match one-word keywords, regardless of the text. All the textboxes are blank; 'Not this' is marked for the first keyword, thus requiring some text, AND no text is required for the second keyword, AND 'Ignore' is marked for the third and fourth keywords. |
| Naming convention for saved 'Search' files: |
|
You can save your files with any names you wish, of course, as long as you can remember which file does what. Abacus uses the following naming convention for saved 'Search' criteria files:
- 'Broad match' = "B", 'Phrase match' = "P", 'Exact match' ="E", followed by a 'dot' (".").
- 'Only this' = "O", 'Not this' = "N", 'Ignore' ="I", followed by a 'dot' (".").
- 'and' = "+", 'or' = "-".
- 'Group by "and"' = a 'dot' (".") followed by "G".
|
| Example 1 (see image) |
|
Select Phrase match and Exact match keyword phrases, with any number of keywords, that DO NOT contain ONLY "live" in the first keyword AND DO contain "chat" anywhere in the second keyword.
Criteria: 'Phrase match' and 'Exact match'; keyword 1 = "live", 'Only this', 'Not this'; 'and' keyword 2 = "chat"; 'and' keyword 3 = blank, 'Ignore'; 'and' keyword 4 = blank, 'Ignore'.
'Search' criteria file name = "PE.ON.live+chat+I.+I..srch" |
| Example 2 (see image) |
|
Select Exact match keyword phrases, with EITHER (a) any number of keywords, that contain anything in the first keyword AND ONLY "chat" in the second keyword, OR (b) three keywords with "software" in the third keyword.
Criteria: 'Exact match'; keyword 1 = blank, 'Ignore'; 'and' keyword 2 = "chat", 'Only this'; 'or' keyword 3 = "software"; 'and' keyword 4 = blank; 'Group by "and"'.
'Search' criteria file name = "E.I.+O.chat-software+.G.srch" |

|
Open the 'Save As' file dialog: (Click 'Save'). (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<S> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click an existing file to overwrite) to 'Save' the file to disk. |
Tip: |
|
AdWords Campaign Manager suggests a filename formed from the 'Ad Group' name textbox. It is recommended to accept the default name, so that you can find this Keyword Feeder List later if you need to Load it again. If you create more than one Keyword Feeder List for an Ad Group in an AdWords Campaign, to avoid confusion, it is very advisable to give all files meaningful names. The recommended file-naming convention is always to form the name from the 'Ad Group' name textbox, followed by a 'plus' sign (+) and the keyword that distinguishes the list from other lists in the Ad Group, e.g., "Live-Chat-Software-Misc+online.keyf" (where "Live-Chat-Software-Misc" is the name of the AdGroup). |

|
|
| Typical
task 22: |
|
Generating, checking and editing the Negative Keyword List. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Generate the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List': Select the "match type" formats that you want for your Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' in the 'Negative Keywords' section <Alt>+<N> by clicking the checkboxes 'Broad match', 'Phrase match', 'Exact match' or <Tab>, <Space>. Select the 'Buttons control' 'Negative Keywords' option <Alt>+<C>, <right arrow> to switch the buttons control from the 'Keyword Feeder List' to the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' below it. (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' is generated. |
Note: |
|
This is the negative keyword list that "feeds" the final output processes. |
| |
|
Checking and editing the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' is almost (see Step 2 below) identical to the operations for the 'Keyword Feeder List', as explained in Typical task 18. The major difference is that there is no 'Search' form for text; there is only a search for 'Match type'. (The 'Select' button becomes a 'Match' button.) Just ensure that the 'Buttons control' 'Negative Keywords' option is selected, so that the buttons control the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List', not the 'Keyword Feeder List'. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Reorder the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' in groups: Select the rows you want to reorder, either manually or by means of the 'Match' button. For example, to select all 'Phrase match' keyword phrases, select any one 'Phrase match' row and click 'Match'. To place the selected rows in a group at the bottom of the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' in reverse order of selection, click the 'Order' button. |
| Example (see
image) |
|
To 'Order' the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' into the match type order: 'Broad match', 'Phrase match', 'Exact match', do the following:
- Select the first row containing a 'Broad match' keyword phrase.
- Click 'Match'.
- Click 'Order'.
- Select the first row containing a 'Phrase match' keyword phrase.
- Click 'Match'.
- Click 'Order'.
- Select the first row containing an 'Exact match' keyword phrase.
- Click 'Match'.
- Click 'Order'.
If the Keywords were sorted in the 'Negative' datagrid in the 'Keywords' tab first, the Negative 'Keyword Feeder List' now appears in reverse sorted order, grouped by match type. If the reverse sorted order is not desired, simply repeat this step to reverse the order back to the original sorted order. |

Typical tasks 23-28 |
|
Designing the Ad Variation template. |
| |
|
|
Important tip: |
|
Before starting to design the Ad Variation, load the combinations list for this Ad Group (Click 'Load combinations list') <Alt>+<L>, if it is not already on the 'Content' tab. This ensures that the correct Ad Group name is in the 'Ad Group' textbox, to maintain the connection between the keyword lists and the advertisements in this Ad Group of the Campaign. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 23: |
|
Designing an Ad Variation template. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Select the keywords required for the Ad Variation template: (Click the first 'Keyword fields' drop-down list) <Alt>+<K>. Select the keyword that you want to be 'Keyword 1'. Click on subsequent 'Keyword fields' drop-down lists <Tab>, <down arrow>, and select the keywords to be next in order. The longest keyword in each category ("field") and its character length are displayed next to the corresponding drop-down list, to aid you in your decisions about default text later. |
Note: |
|
It does not matter which keywords are Keyword 1, 2, 3 or 4. You cannot, however, use 'Keyword 2' if you do not use 'Keyword 1', and so on; You must use the keyword numbers in strict order. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Name the Ad Variation template: (Click the 'Ad Variation' textbox) <Alt>+<V> or <Tab> and type the name of the new Ad Variation template. |
Tip: |
|
Give the Ad Variation template a meaningful name that indicates its content, so that you can find it easily when you want to Load it again. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Design the Ad Variation template: (Click the 'Headline' textbox) <Alt>+<H> and type the 'Headline' of the new Ad Variation template. <Tab> to each subsequent textbox, typing the two 'Description' lines, the 'Display URL' and the 'Destination URL'. |
Tip: |
|
Until you become proficient at designing Ad Variation templates, it's a good idea to type the ad, using the longest keywords shown in the 'Keyword fields' section, before inserting Keyword placeholders. |
Tip: |
|
It enhances your Google Quality Score if your 'Display URL' and 'Destination URL' contain a keyword or are, at least, relevant to the subject. |
Note: |
|
The 'Destination URL' will be the default landing page web address for all the ads generated for this Ad Variation template. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 24: |
|
Specifying the Ad Variation template default text. |
Note: |
|
Google sets the following limits on line length in AdWords advertisements:
-- Headline - 25 characters
-- Description 1 - 35 characters
-- Description 2 - 35 characters
-- Display URL - 35 characters
If a line turns out to be too long when it's generated from the Ad Variation template, AdWords Campaign Manager automatically replaces each keyword in the line with the default text that you specify, in the order of priority that you specify. Use the 'Max.'' indicators, which show the maximum number of characters remaining for use in each line, together with the longest keyword indicators in the 'Keyword fields' section, to help you to determine the default text for each Keyword. In the example in the images here, you can see that the longest Headline "Valentine's Day Carnations" is one character too long and would be truncated by Google. Similarly, Description 1 "Yellow Carnations for Valentine's Day" is two characters too long. Therefore you know that your default text for the keywords in those lines should be at least 1 or 2 characters shorter than the longest keywords. For your convenience the length of the default text is shown beneath its textbox for each Keyword number. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Determine the default text for each Keyword: (Click the 'Default text' 'Keyword 1' textbox) <Alt>+<T> or <Tab> from the 'Destination URL' textbox, and type the default text which should replace the actual keyword whenever Keyword 1 is too long. <Tab> to the subsequent textboxes and do the same for Keywords 2, 3 and 4. In this example Keyword 1 (Field "colour") will be replaced by the default text "fresh" if the actual colour makes the line too long; Keyword 2 (Field "flowers") will be replaced by "flowers"; Keyword 3 (Field "state") will be replaced by "your state"; Keyword 4 (Field "day") will be replaced by "same day". |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Specify the default text priority: Click on or <Tab> to the first drop-down list under 'Default text priority in lines containing more than one Keyword', and select the priority you decide on for Keyword 1 <1> or <2> or <3> or <4>. <Tab> to the other drop-down lists as necessary, to specify the default text priority of Keywords 2, 3 and 4. The drop-down lists adjust themselves automatically when you choose a number; so, you never have to worry about there being identical priorities. In our example, we think that the colour is the least important of the four keywords; so, we make Keyword 1's priority "4". We decide that the name of the flowers should be replaced next; so, Keyword 2 has priority "3". The geographic area we're targeting is of secondary importance; so, Keyword 3 has priority "2". Top priority goes to the name of the occasion that our Campaign is targeting; so, Keyword 4 gets priority "1". Now we can be sure that this particular occasion that we're targeting, Valentine's Day, will always appear in our ads, provided that the same line contains another keyword whose default text is shorter than the keyword it replaces. |
|
|
Insert Keyword placeholders: Now for the magic! (Click the 'Headline' textbox) <Alt>+<H> and select the text of the first keyword. In our example it is "Valentine's Day". (Click 'Keyword 4') <Alt>+<4>. The actual text is replaced by the placeholder for Keyword 4, which is "[K4]". Select any other keyword in the 'Headline' textbox. In our example it is "carnations". (Click 'Keyword 2') <Alt>+<2>. The actual text is replaced by the placeholder for Keyword 2, which is "[K2]". Repeat this operation in the other textboxes, 'Description 1', 'Description 2', 'Display URL' and 'Destination URL' as necessary. |
Note: |
|
If you use the mouse to operate the 'Keyword' placeholder buttons, rather than the keyboard shortcut keys, do not hold the mouse button down. The placeholder is inserted in the textbox only if the mouse click is less than one-fifth of a second. |
Note: |
|
The facsimile of the actual text that will appear in the Google ad still shows the longest keywords, even after they have been subsituted by the Keyword placeholders. So, you can still see how your longest ad will look on a web page. Moreover, the Headline in the facsimile is clickable, just like the real ad, and opens your browser at the Destination URL landing page. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 25: |
|
Specifying the capitalization for the Ad Variation template. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Specify the capitalization preference: (Click the 'Capitalization' option) <Alt>+<Z>, <right arrow>, ... to select your preference of a capital letter at the beginning of words. The options are: 'Default' - does not change the original text; 'First word' - Only the first word starts with a capital letter; 'Keywords' - All Keywords start with a capital letter; 'All words' - All words start with a capital letter. |
Note: |
|
Words with capital letters in the original text are unchanged. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 26: |
|
Specifying the default status of generated Ad Variations. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Specify the default status: (Click the 'Ad Variation Status' option) <Alt>+<I>, <Shift>+<Tab>, <arrow key>, to change the default status setting of all advertisements to be generated. The status can be changed for individual ads later in the 'Output' index tab. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 27: |
|
Saving an Ad Variation template to a (.var) file. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Open the 'Save As' file dialog: (Click 'Save Ad') <Alt>+<I>, <Tab>, <Enter>. (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<S> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click an existing file to overwrite) to 'Save' the file to disk. |
Tip: |
|
AdWords Campaign Manager suggests a filename formed from the 'Ad Variation' name textbox. It is recommended to accept the default name, so that you can find this Ad Variation template later if you need to Load it again. It is likely that you'll create many Ad Variation templates for each Ad Group in an AdWords Campaign. To avoid confusion, it is very advisable to give all files meaningful names. The recommended file-naming convention is always to form the name from the 'Ad Variation' name textbox. |

Generating, checking and editing the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Generate the 'Plain text' Keywords List: (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'Plain text' Keywords List is generated. |
Note: |
|
This is the most basic of the bulk upload formats, and is suitable for AdWords Campaigns where each keyword has the same default maximum CPC bid, and there is only one landing page, i.e., the default Destination URL that you set for your Ad Group on the Google AdWords Campaign web site. |
| Option (see
image) |
|
Generate the 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List: Mark the 'Negative' checkbox <Alt>+<N>. (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List is generated. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Check the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List: Scroll down the Keywords List, checking for any errors. To edit a keyword, select its cell in the datagrid and press the <F2> key, or click twice on the cell. If you just start typing when a cell is selected, you overwrite all text in the cell. You can undo changes by pressing <Esc> or <Ctrl>+<Z>. Pressing <Enter> or moving away from an edited cell saves the edits, and they cannot be undone. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Delete rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List: Select any unwanted keyword phrases individually by clicking the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing the unwanted keyword phrase and clicking 'Delete' <Del>. To select rows containing a certain word or phrase, use the 'Select' button, explained in the next Typical task below. |
Very important tip: |
|
Do not be overwhelmed by the number of keyword phrases generated in the Keywords List. Then you can use the 'Select' tools to select them, so that you can delete them in bulk. |

|
|
| Typical
task 30: |
|
Selecting rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List. |
| Option 1 (see

|
Select all rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List: (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S> while there is no text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox. |
| Option 2 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List starting with certain text: Type the text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. Mark the 'at start' checkbox <Alt>+<T>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 3 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List ending with certain text: Type the text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. Mark the 'at end' checkbox <Alt>+<D>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 4 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List containing certain text, but not at either end: Type the text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. Mark the 'elsewhere' checkbox <Alt>+<H>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 5 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List not containing certain text anywhere in the keyword: Type the text in the 'without the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
Notes: |
|
The textual searches are case-sensitive. You can select rows, using any combination of the 'at start', 'at end' and 'elsewhere' checkboxes. (The [brackets] and "double-quotes" characters are treated as text, so that you can select all 'Exact match' or 'Phrase match' keyword phrases.) If there is any text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox, and no checkboxes are marked, no rows are selected. To deselect selected rows, click on any cell in the datagrid or the 'Deselect' button. |

|
|
| Typical
task 31: |
|
Uploading the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List to a Google AdWords Campaign. |
Note: |
|
Copying many rows of a list to the clipboard can take a long time, even on a fast computer -- perhaps 1 minute per 1,000 rows. It is advisable, therefore, to be certain that the list is correct before starting the process. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Copy the data in the 'Plain text' Keywords List or 'Plain text' Negative Keywords List to the clipboard: (Click 'Copy') <Alt>+<C>. If no rows or all rows are selected, all rows are copied to the clipboard. If any rows are selected, only the selected rows are copied to the clipboard. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Go to the 'Campaign > Ad Group > Keywords > Edit Keywords' bulk upload tool at the Google AdWords web site: Click the 'Go there now' hyperlink after the 'Campaign URL' textbox. Log in to your Google AdWords account; click on the Campaign name; click on the Ad Group name; click the 'Keywords' index tab; click the 'Edit Keywords' link. |
Note: |
|
If the web address in the 'Campaign URL' textbox is incorrect for your Campaign, you can edit it <Alt>+<U>. It is saved and loaded automatically. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Paste the data into the 'Campaign > Ad Group > Keywords > Edit Keywords' bulk upload textbox. Enter your 'Default bid' in the textbox. Click 'Save Changes'. The Destination URL that you set in your Google AdWords Campaign will be the default Ad Group destination URL for all keywords, and clicks on advertisements that you created in your Google AdWords Campaign will direct visitors there. |
Note: |
|
If you use other software to generate web pages from a keyword list, it is the 'Plain text' Keywords List of 'Broad match' keywords that you should use for that purpose. |

|
Refresh the 'Browser' with live ads relating to the keywords currently visible in the 'Plain text' Keywords List: Ensure that no rows are selected by clicking 'Deselect' <Alt>+<E>. (Click 'Refresh') <Alt>+<R> to refresh the 'Browser' with current live Google ads. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Refresh the 'Browser' with live ads relating to the keywords currently selected in the 'Plain text' Keywords List: Select rows of keywords according to your choice. (Click 'Refresh') <Alt>+<R> to refresh the 'Browser' with current live Google ads. |
Note: |
|
The 'Browser' tool is very useful for inspecting and assessing your competitors' current ads for the keywords you're considering using. The fewer relevant ads you see for your selection of keywords, the less competition there is for them, and the lower your maximum bid can be. These example images were taken in mid-March. Compare the first, whose keywords list displayed "Valentine's Day", with the second, where rows beginning with "[Mother's Day" were selected. Because Valentine's Day occurred a month ago, the browser shows few relevant ads, but, because Mother's Day is approaching, there are many relevant ads. |

Generate the 'Ad Group' Keywords List with URLs: (Click the 'with URLs' option) <Alt>+<O>, <right arrow>. Specify the file extension of your landing pages: (Click the 'File extension' textbox <Alt>+<F>, and type the file extension, e.g., "html", "htm", "php", "asp", "aspx". (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The Ad Group' Keywords List is generated with a unique Destination URL for each keyword, formed from the 'Destination URL' textbox on the 'Content' tab and the keyword phrase itself. |
Note: |
|
This format is suitable for AdWords Campaigns where each keyword has its own individual maximum CPC bid, and there is a landing page for each keyword phrase. Such landing pages can be created manually (very time-consuming) or automatically by software from a plain text keyword list, such as Abacus 'AdWords Campaign Creator' (recommended). |
| Step 2 (see

|
| Typical
task 40: |
|
Generating, checking and editing the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Generate the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List: (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List is generated. |
Note: |
|
This format is suitable for AdWords Campaigns where each keyword has its own individual maximum CPC bid. The number of landing pages is irrelevant, because Google will display the advertisement most relevant to the keyword phrase being sought. Visitors are then directed to the landing page specified for the ad shown. This could be a single default URL for the Ad Group or a unique URL formed by the AdWords Campaign Manager software from the keywords used in the ad. |
Tip: |
|
The default 'Status' of all keyword phrases is set by means of the option buttons beneath the 'Keyword Feeder List' datagrid in the 'Content' index tab. |
| Option (see
image) |
|
Generate the 'AdWords Editor' Negative Keywords List: Click the 'Negative keywords' option <Alt>+<N>. (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'AdWords Editor' Negative Keywords List is generated. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Check the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List: Scroll down the Keywords List, checking for any errors. |
Very important tip: |
|
Do not be overwhelmed by the number of keyword phrases generated in the Keywords List. Then you can use the 'Select' tools to select them, so that you can delete them in bulk. |
Tip: |
|
Always check that the 'Low bid' amount shown is not lower than Google's minimum CPC bid amount. If it is, click 'Options...' and set the 'Minimum CPC bid for your country's currency'. (See also the last 'Note' of 'Typical task 9'.) |
Tip: |
|
The 'Match', '$ Bid' and 'Status' columns are sorted in ascending and descending order alternately, when you click the column header. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Delete rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List: Select any unwanted keyword phrases individually by clicking the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing the unwanted keyword phrase and clicking 'Delete' <Del>. To select rows containing a certain word or phrase, use the 'Select' button, explained in the next Typical task below. |
Note: |
|
It is quite possible that, when the individual keywords are combined in a single phrase, some duplicate phrases will be created: for example, if the word "service" exists at the end of the second keyword and also at the start of the third keyword. You do not need to look out for these anomalies, because the Google AdWords Editor tool filters them out automatically. |

| Typical
task 41: |
|
Selecting rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List. |
| Option 1 (see

|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List: (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S> while there is no text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox. |
| Option 2 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List starting with certain text in the 'Keyword' column: Type the text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. Mark the 'at start' checkbox <Alt>+<T>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 3 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List ending with certain text in the 'Keyword' column: Type the text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. Mark the 'at end' checkbox <Alt>+<D>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 4 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List containing certain text in the 'Keyword' column, but not at either end: Type the text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. Mark the 'elsewhere' checkbox <Alt>+<H>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 5 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List not containing certain text anywhere in the keyword: Type the text in the 'without the text' textbox <Alt>+<W>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 6 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List according to 'Match' type: Select the required match type in the "Match..." drop-down list: (Broad) <B> or (Phrase) <P> or (Exact) <E>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 7 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List according to 'Status': Select the required status in the "Status..." drop-down list: (Active) <A> or (Paused) <P>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
| Option 8 (see
image) |
|
Select all rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List according to any combined criteria: Type text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox, mark any number of 'position' checkboxes, type text in the 'without the text' textbox, select a match type in the "Match..." drop-down list, select a status in the "Status..." drop-down list. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
Notes: |
|
The textual searches are case-sensitive. You can select rows, using any combination of the 'at start', 'at end' and 'elsewhere' checkboxes. (The [brackets] and "double-quotes" characters are treated as text, so that you can select all 'Exact match' or 'Phrase match' keyword phrases.) If there is any text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox, and no checkboxes are marked and no 'Match' type or 'Status' is selected, no rows are selected. To deselect selected rows, click on any cell in the datagrid or the 'Deselect' button. |

|
Select the required rows in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List. In this example image all rows with a "Phrase" 'Match' type are selected, regardless of current 'Status'. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Select the operation to be performed on the rows: Click the 'Active' <Alt>+<A>, 'Paused' <Alt>+<A>, <down arrow> or 'Reverse' <Alt>+<R> option. (Click 'Switch') <Tab>, <Enter>. 'Active' sets all selected keyword phrases to "Active". 'Paused' sets all selected keyword phrases to "Paused". 'Reverse' sets all "Paused" selected keyword phrases to "Active" and all "Active" selected keyword phrases to "Paused". In this example the 'Reverse' operation has been performed. |

|
| Typical
task 43: |
|
Uploading the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List to a Google AdWords Campaign. |
Important note: |
|
Before you upload data to your AdWords Campaign, set up your basic preferences in Google's Campaign interface. In the section 'Bidding and budget > Bidding option > Focus on clicks' select the option 'Manual bidding for clicks', NOT 'Automatic bidding to try to maximize clicks for your target budget', which is the default setting! Otherwise your individually calculated maximum CPC bids will not be allowed. If you omit to do this, you will see Google's error message that you cannot set bids manually, when you paste your first Ad Group. In this case delete the Ad Group, change the setting in Google's Campaign interface, and download the change into the Google AdWords Editor tool thus: 'Account > Get Recent Account Changes > Basic'. Then paste the Ad Group keywords again. |
Note: |
|
Copying many rows of a list to the clipboard can take a long time, even on a fast computer -- perhaps 1 minute per 1,000 rows. It is advisable, therefore, to be certain that the list is correct before starting the process. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Copy the data in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List to the clipboard: (Click 'Copy') <Alt>+<C>. If no rows or all rows are selected, all rows are copied to the clipboard. If any rows are selected, only the selected rows are copied to the clipboard. |
| Option: Do not 'Include Campaign & Ad Group' (see
image) |
|
Unmark the 'Include Campaign & Ad Group' checkbox <Alt>+<I> to exclude the Campaign name and Ad Group name from the copied list. Copy the data in the 'AdWords Editor' Keywords List to the clipboard: (Click 'Copy') <Alt>+<C>. If no rows or all rows are selected, all rows are copied to the clipboard. If any rows are selected, only the selected rows are copied to the clipboard. |
| Step 2 (see

Generating, checking and editing the 'Advertisements' List. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Generate the 'Advertisements' List: (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'Advertisements' List is generated. |
Note: |
|
Google will display the advertisement most relevant to the keyword phrase being sought. Visitors are then directed to the landing page specified as the default URL for this Ad Variation template in the 'Destination URL' textbox in the 'Content' index tab. |
Option 'with URLs'
(see
image) |
|
Mark the 'With URLs' checkbox <Alt>+<U>. <Tab> to the 'File extension' textbox <Alt>+<F> and type the file extension for the filenames to be generated, e.g., "html", "htm", "php", "asp", "aspx". Generate the 'Advertisements' List: (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'Advertisements' List is generated with a unique landing page URL for each ad. |
Note: |
|
Google will display the advertisement most relevant to the keyword phrase being sought. Visitors are then directed to the landing page specified for the ad shown. This is a unique URL formed by the AdWords Campaign Manager software from the keywords used in the ad. |
Option 'with URLs' (dynamic)
(query string image)
(Destination URL image) |
|
Mark the 'With URLs' checkbox <Alt>+<U>. <Tab> to the 'File extension' textbox <Alt>+<F> and type the query string for the parameters to be generated, e.g., "?a=[K1]&b=[K2]&c=[K3]&d=[K4]". The Keyword placeholders in the query string are replaced with the actual keywords by AdWords Campaign Manager, to form a unique Destination URL for each advertisement. Specify the URL of the dynamic landing page in the 'Destination URL' textbox in the 'Content' index tab, up to and including the file extension, e.g., "php", "asp", "aspx". Generate the 'Advertisements' List: (Click 'Generate') <Alt>+<G>. The 'Advertisements' List is generated with a default landing page URL, appended with a unique query string for each ad. |
Note: |
|
Google will display the advertisement most relevant to the keyword phrase being sought. Visitors are then directed to the landing page with the query string specified for the ad shown. This is a unique URL formed by the AdWords Campaign Manager software from the keywords used in the ad. This allows a single dynamic landing page to be used to display textual content containing the keywords in each advertisement, as an alternative to multiple static (.html) landing pages. (This dynamic landing page can be created by the companion Abacus software product, 'Web Page Generator' (recommended).) |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
Check the 'Advertisements' List: Scroll down the Ads List, checking for any errors. To edit an ad, select a cell in the datagrid and press the <F2> key, or click twice on the cell. If you just start typing when a cell is selected, you overwrite all text in the cell. You can undo changes by pressing <Esc> or <Ctrl>+<Z>. Pressing <Enter> or moving away from an edited cell saves the edits, and they cannot be undone. |
Very important tip: |
|
Do not be overwhelmed by the number of text ads generated in the 'Advertisements' List. Checking even a huge list is quicker and easier than you might think, because the ads are organized in groups, beginning with the first keyword, then the second keyword, then the third and then the fourth. The fourth keyword group is repeated for each third keyword, the third keyword group is repeated for each second keyword, and the second keyword group is repeated for each first keyword. Once you have checked from the top of the list down to the end of the fourth keyword group in the first complete "set" of ads, you can recognize the pattern and scroll down quickly to find other ads that you might want to edit or delete. Then you can use the 'Select' tools to select them, so that you can edit or delete them in bulk. |
Note: |
|
If, after all your efforts and with the help of the default text, an ad line still exceeds Google's limit, the offending cell is displayed in red, so that you can spot it easily. Select the cell to display the number of excess characters. Edit the text until the red background disappears, and then the line will be within Google's limit. Lines exceeding the limit will be truncated by Google. |
| Step 3 (see
image) |
|
Delete rows in the 'Advertisements' List: Select any unwanted ads individually by clicking the grey square at the extreme left of any row containing the unwanted ad and clicking 'Delete' <Del>. (Click 'Select') <Alt>+<S>. |
Notes: |
|
The textual searches are case-sensitive. You can select rows, using any combination of the 'in Headline', 'in Desc 1' and 'in Desc 2' checkboxes. If there is any text in the 'Select rows with the text' textbox, and no checkboxes are marked and no 'Status' is selected, no rows are selected. To deselect selected rows, click on any cell in the datagrid or the 'Deselect' button. |

| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
(Click 'Replace') <Alt>+<P> to replace all instances of the text in the selected rows, according to the following Notes. |
Notes: |
|
If '(and/or)' is marked:
- If 'in Headline' is marked, the text is replaced in the 'Headline' column.
- If 'in Desc. 1' is marked, the text is replaced in the 'Description line 1' column.
- If 'in Desc. 2' is marked, the text is replaced in the 'Description line 2' column.
- If none of these three checkboxes is marked, the text is replaced in all columns.
If '(and/or)' is unmarked, the text is replaced in all columns except 'Headline', 'Description line 1' and 'Description line 2', but:
- If 'in Headline' is marked, the text is replaced in the 'Headline' column also.
- If 'in Desc. 1' is marked, the text is replaced in the 'Description line 1' column also.
- If 'in Desc. 2' is marked, the text is replaced in the 'Description line 2' column also.
These combinations enable you to replace text in many column variations. |

|
Very important tip: |
|
For the most tightly integrated AdWords campaign, follow these steps: |
| |
|
THIS SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS IS PROBABLY THE MOST USEFUL GUIDANCE INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE. FOLLOW THE DETAILS IN STEPS 12-15 OF THE 'SUMMARY' TAB IN THE 'HINTS' FORM OF THE ADWORDS CAMPAIGN MANAGER SOFTWARE, AND YOU WILL BE ABLE TO UPLOAD COMPREHENSIVE GOOGLE ADWORDS CAMPAIGNS VERY QUICKLY. |
| Step A (see
image) |
|
Select a small group of closely related text ads in the 'Advertisements' List (up to Google's maximum limit for text ads in an Ad Group). |
| Step B (see
image) |
|
Select all the keywords in the 'AdWords Editor' datagrid that appear in the selected text ads, and no others (up to Google's maximum limit for keywords in an Ad Group). |
| Step C (see
image) |
|
'Copy' the selected keywords, accepting the suggested Ad Group name. (Ad Group names are incremented automatically.) |
| Step D (see
image) |
|
Paste these keywords into your campaign in the Google AdWords Editor tool ('Keywords' index tab > 'Make Multiple Changes' > 'Add/Update Multiple Keywords') |
| Step E (see
image) |
|
'Copy' the selected text ads, changing the suggested (incremented) Ad Group name to the same Ad Group name as for the keywords. |
| Step F (see
image) |
|
Paste these text ads into your campaign in the Google AdWords Editor tool ('Ads' > 'Text ads' index tab > 'Make Multiple Changes' > 'Add/Update Multiple Text Ads') |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 52: |
|
Saving the 'Advertisements' List to an advertisement (.adv) file. |
Note: |
|
Saving many rows of a list to a file can take a long time, even on a fast computer -- perhaps 1 minute per 1,000 rows. It is advisable, therefore, to be certain that the list is correct before starting the process. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Open the 'Save As' file dialog: (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<V>. (Click 'Save') <Alt>+<S> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click an existing file to overwrite) to 'Save' the file to disk. |
Tip: |
|
AdWords Campaign Manager suggests a filename formed from the 'Ad Variation' name textbox. It is recommended to accept the default name, so that you can find this Ad Variation 'Advertisements' list later if you need to Load it again. |
| |
|
|
| Typical
task 53: |
|
Loading an 'Advertisements' List. |
| Step 1 (see
image) |
|
Load an 'Advertisements' List from a file: (Click 'Load') <Alt>+<L> to open the 'Open' file dialog. Select an (.adv) file containing an advertisments list. |
| Step 2 (see
image) |
|
(Click 'Open') <Alt>+<O> or simply <Enter>, (or double-click the file) to Load the file into the 'Advertisements' List datagrid. |
